“The HotChillee Cape Rouleur is the best event of its kind in the world” cycling-weekly

The HotChillee Cape Rouleur 2020 is a 5-day cycling tour of the Western Cape, South Africa, starting in our host town of Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands before riding with rolling road closures to the Cape Town Waterfront.

Franschhoek is situated just a 1 hour drive from Cape Town, with breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world class cuisine and the finest wines all combing to make the perfect host town.

Stages range between 100 – 150km per day with riders finishing by mid afternoon, leaving plenty of time for recovery sessions by the pool and fine dining at leisure in the evening.

Riders join one of three fully supported speed groups and ride through some of the most beautiful scenery in South Africa with rolling road closures, motorbike outriders, lead cars, HotChillee Ride Captains, mechanical and medical support.

Social Ride and Wine Tasting - Saturday 29th February - £25 per person

For those of you who are arriving in Franschhoek on Saturday 29th February we would like to invite you to join us for a short ride to spin out the legs, check your bike building skills are still sharp and to taste some of the stunning local cuisine and fine wines that Franschhoek has to offer.

Lead by HotChillee Ride Captains, we'll leave the Protea Hotel (Event HQ) at 15:00 for an hour's social ride, followed by wine tasting at Leopard's Leap. Food and drinks included, and if any of the wine takes your fancy, you'll be able to order for delivery both locally and internationally!

Non-riding partners are welcome and transport will be arranged. Available to book via your registration form.

Riders are seeded into three speed groups at a 7km Individual Time Trial on an the first day:

Group 1: 29km/h+
Group 2: 27-28km/h
Group 3: 25-26km/h

Each speed group rides as a peloton for the rest of the event, with the HotChillee Ride Captains in radio contact with the support vehicles to help ensure the safety of each group at all times.

The format consists of tempo group riding with timed race sections allowing the faster speed groups to compete for Leader’s Jerseys and Age Category Awards, whilst those looking for a more social experience can enjoy the endurance nature of the event in a fully supported environment.

Whatever your speed group, you will be looked after like a pro-cyclist with a mechanics support van following each group carrying service wheels and service bikes so no more fixing punctures at the side of the road.

You can find the routes and profiles for the ITT and Stages 1 - 3 here. The festival ride route will be announced in February 2020.

The event is restricted to roadworthy road bicycles only. If you are in any doubt then contact the organisers whose decision is final. The ride takes place on tarred or cobbled roads.

Note that no bicycle is permitted to have unconventional handlebars including triathlon bars, aero bars, clip-ons, prayer bars, and cow bars.

HotChillee Cape Rouleur 2020 participants have the option of registering with a non-riding partner. Whilst you are on your bike your non-riding partner can lay by the pool and soak up the Africa sun, or explore the delights of the Western Cape wine lands.

Non-riding partner upgrades include:

  • Accommodation with rider in either twin or double room
  • Transfer from Cape Town Airport to Franschhoek on arrival
  • Transfer from Franschhoek to Gordon’s Bay after Stage 3
  • Option of daily social rides
  • Ticket to the Celebration Braai after Stage 3
  • Transfer from Gordon’s Bay to the Cape Town on the last day
  • Reception at the iconic Cape Town Waterfront event finish

Each year we invite non-riding partners to take part in daily supported social rides. These are very relaxed and always punctuated by coffee stops, however riders will need to be able to ride 30km minimum. Bikes can be hired from Franschhoek Cycles or e-bikes from Day Trippers. There is no additional charge for the social rides.

The Festival Ride takes place on Thursday 5 March 2020 and forms the last day of the HotChillee Cape Rouleur. As on other days of the Cape Rouleur participants ride in three speed groups each supported by the fabulous Think Bike Marshals, HotChillee Ride Captains, mechanics vehicle, ambulance and the local traffic police. There are no race sections on this day.

The 2020 Festival Ride route will be announced in January. In 2019 we started from Gordon’s Bay and followed the False Bay coast line along Baden Powell Drive and into Khayelitsha, the biggest Township in the Western Cape where we stopped en route for coffee and cake with our friends at Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy.

HotChillee Cape Rouleur riders have the option to book a guaranteed seeded entry to the Cape Town Cycle Tour. A seeded entry means an earlier start time, ensuring that you can ride ahead of the crowds and in a speed group that suits your ability. More information and the route can be found here.

Entries are ZAR 1100 per person. You can find your entry link in your registration confirmation email (please note you will need your passport or ID number to complete your registration). If you have any further questions or can't find your entry link please contact kian@hotchillee.com
