If you can’t make our iconic “Gains Guaranteed” paced Hare and Hounds ride on a Thursday at 1830 – a key session in our Winter Warmer Training Plan, fear not, you can still get a similar sustained session anytime by joining a Pace Partner.
Probably the simplest and most flexible option for a Gain Train esque workout is to to hop on with a Pace Partner.
Since being rolled out as a Beta product a couple of years ago, the Pace Partners are now ploughing their relentless furrows permanently on the platform pretty much 24/7.
Simply select the Pace Partner on the menu screen that equates to the Class you’d normally ride on Gain Train.
You’ll then be dropped in with the bunch and get a bit of pedal assist for 10 seconds to ensure you don’t get dropped.
A 45-60 minute session with a Pace Partner will equate pretty well to the extended Tempo/Sweet-spot effort of Gain Train. It’s also a great way to practice your drafting technique.
Add some spice
Mix the session up and add a bit more intensity by sprinting sprint sections and attacking climbs – then just sit-up, spin, recover from your effort and rejoin the Pace Partner blob when it catches it.
With 5 minutes to go, recreate Gain Train’s 3km Go! Go! Go! by attacking your Pace Partner and seeing if you can stay away.
Other rides, races and events to try
Keep an eye out for future posts where we’ll be riding and reviewing other events on Zwift that compliment our sessions.

Glen is usually behind the scenes making sure that the Hotchillee Ride Captains and event participants have fully functioning bicycles to ride but he occasionally makes an appearance in front of the camera to share his wisdom. If he’s not fixing or building bikes he’ll be out riding in #SweetSussex. If you want to know anything about Cyclocross, Glen is the man to ask.
