HotChillee Development Rider Programme
South Africa

In 2013 we set up the HotChillee Development Rider Programme in partnership with ORYX Stainless, The Western Cape Government and local cycling organisations in Cape Town. The initiative supports young South African talent and creates a channel for riders to compete in Europe.

The programme is now run in partnership with Wattbike who sponsor places for young SA riders to compete in Europe. As part of the programme they also provide Wattbikes to Velokhaya, a cycling academy based in Khayelitsha township where young riders can train and be performances tested without having to travel to the UCI World Cycling Centre near Johannesburg.

We’re proud of our success so far with two of our riders Nicholas Dlamini and Shameeg Salie signing pro contracts with Dimension Data as Continental Riders. Mentors on the programme include former Tour de France and Tripple Crown winner Stephen Roche and Team GB cyclist Ben Swift.

Here’s how Marco Abrahams and Thula Mxenge got on when they joined Team Wattbike to ride the HotChillee London-Paris/Alpine Challenge Double this year…
